Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers at the TOM make a difference! Whether you work with the public or behind the scenes, volunteering offers the opportunity to share an interest, gain work experience, support the community, explore one’s potential, and meet new friends. We ask that volunteers commit 30 hours per calendar year to The TOM. Once volunteers have completed 30 hours of service in a year; they are entitled to a complimentary individual membership. The minimum age for volunteering at The TOM is 16.

THE TOM SHOP

In The TOM Shop, volunteers generally work a 2 to 5 hour shifts weekly. You must be comfortable working with the public, enjoy art, deal with sales, track visitors, register people for art classes and more. It’s a fun, creative environment and great work experience.

DOCENT

The TOM is very excited to bring back this valuable resource to the Gallery. Docents lead thousands of visitors through the galleries each year, inspiring visitors of all ages with their insight into the works of art in the permanent collection and special exhibitions.

HOSPITALITY

Every year the Gallery organizes several openings and special events. For special events, volunteers help with poster distribution, set up and take down, serving food and beverages and more.

MARKETING

There are so many events and programs going on at The TOM! The marketing department has the task of spreading all this information around Owen Sound and surrounding areas. Volunteer opportunities are based on specific marketing initiatives. Regularly volunteers support:

  • distribution of handbills and post cards
  • activation of community outreach booths
  • other initiatives as necessary

ADMINISTRATION: Volunteers in administration will support The TOM staff with miscellaneous administrative needs. Tasks may include:

  • research, as assigned
  • organizing the library
  • follow-up contact
  • data entry
  • phone calls

FUND DEVELOPMENT: Volunteers in Fund Development help the team whose job it is to raise funds for The TOM in a variety of ways including memberships, donations, sponsorship, and grants. Tasks may include:

  • mail outs
  • prospect research

FAMILY ART WORKSHOP ASSISTANT

Looking for a unique opportunity to develop skills in leadership, program delivery, and communication? Eager to share your own abilities? Consider joining the Education Team at The TOM!

TOM volunteers contribute to every aspect of activity at the museum. Volunteers spark kids’ creative learning, encourage exploration and discovery in our exhibits and galleries, and enrich our programs and events.

EXHIBITION INSTALLATION VOLUNTEERS

Tasks include patching walls, carrying and hanging paintings. Volunteers should be prepared to use hammers, carry heavier art pieces, climb ladders and be a part of a dynamic team dedicated to mounting exhibitions that range from historic works to contemporary works that may be installation-based and include cutting-edge technologies. This opportunity would also be ideal for art, art history or museum studies students looking to gain practical gallery experience.
