Volunteers – A Vital Part of the TOM!
Gallery volunteers are part of a multi-talented team who help the Tom Thomson Art Gallery in bringing the best of the visual arts to the region. Plus, they have a terrific time doing it! Volunteers are one of our most valuable assets. Their dedication and effort is highly valued.
Volunteering is a great way to meet new people, especially if you are new to an area. It will also strengthen your ties to the community and broaden your support network, exposing you to people with common interests, neighborhood resources, while being involved in meaningful and fulfilling work.
As a volunteer, you can learn new skills, share your professional experience and even advance your career. Volunteers are exposed to multiple opportunities to learn about art and artists, and about the day-to-day functioning of public gallery – one that is a national treasure!
Volunteers are involved in all aspects of life at the Gallery. Opportunities include Front Desk reception, working at the Gallery Shop, researching or otherwise supporting curatorial programming, collections and archiving, participating on one of the Gallery’s many committees (such as fundraising, marketing and events), being a docent or assisting with tours, workshops or classes. You don’t need a degree in art to be a volunteer at the Gallery and we offer flexible hours or the opportunity to work on specific projects.
To become a volunteer, or for further information, please contact Patty Sargent-Gibson, Membership and Volunteer Coordinator 519-376-1932, ext. 232 or firstname.lastname@example.org

Become a Docent!
If you are keen on learning and love art – or want to know more about it – this is the opportunity for you. The Docent experience offers an educational adventure, the opportunity to network with the community, satisfaction in supporting a local charity and having fun! As a Docent you will meet and greet visitors to the Gallery, and provide information about the exhibitions and Gallery. Full training is provided.
Requirements: Friendly, outgoing personality and a positive attitude.
Time Commitment: Flexible.
Minimum Age: 16
As a Docent, you will have the opportunity to meet new friends, build professional relationships, and have fun while contributing to a great cause. In addition, volunteers receive recognition throughout the year, as well as discounts at the Gallery gift shop. Most importantly, however, you will have the satisfaction that comes with supporting the Tom Thomson Art Gallery in its mission to bring the best of the visual arts to the Owen Sound community.
Gallery Shop Receptionists are our critical link to the public. We have immediate and pressing need for persons to staff this very important area. Comprehensive training is provided.
