The Tom Thomson Art Gallery (TOM) is pleased to announce its latest Available Space Art Project (ASAP) installation in the Owen Sound community. From November 1 to December 1, 2017 Snapping Mythsby local photographer John White has been installed in one of the vacant storefronts along 2nd Avenue East (across from The Milk Maid) on Wednesday November 1st, 2017. Snapping Mythshighlights John White’s twenty-year celebrity photography career for magazines and media outlets around the world.  While these images share momentary glimpses into the lives of the rich and famous, any sense of who these people really are is only fleeting.

Snapping Myths highlights 20 large-scale portraits of prominent celebrities photographed by John White throughout his 20-year career in the industry, capturing such stars as Brad Pitt, Drew Barrymore, Lauren Bacall, Will Smith, Amy Winehouse, and Robin Williams, and Johnny Depp among many others.  This exhibition demonstrates White’s passion for candid celebrity photography in which observation is rooted in the spontaneous and the unplanned.  In some of these photographs, White has given the stars direction to pose for the shot, but in others, White makes viewers privy to the private moments of his subjects either captured while going about normal mundane activities or caught in the throes of a scandal, only made interesting because of their celebrity status.

Snapping Myths, curated by Heather McLeese (the TOM’s curator of Temporary Exhibitions) is a gorgeous show and demonstrates how an unoccupied retail space can be transformed by artists and arts professionals into a vibrant active hub of activity as well as creating a beautiful space for prospective tenants to visualize their business in this location.

The TOM gratefully acknowledges the Community Foundation Grey Bruce for their generous support in ASAP programming for 2017 and support from Zebros Capital landlord Albert Shoihet.
